Techstars Austin Unveils its Second Class

logo@2xA Longhorn Startup company, Burpy, is among the latest crop of Techstars Austin companies selected to participate in its three month long accelerator.

Burpy, founded by a group of UT undergraduates and led by Aseem Ali, is an online grocery delivery business available in Austin, San Antonio, Houston and Dallas.

The other team from Austin is Experiment Engine, which runs split tests for companies by a panel of experts. The rest of the teams come from New York City, Brooklyn, Birmingham, Blacksburg, Phoenix, Marina del Rey, San Diego, Belfast and London. The 11 Techstars Austin teams are an electric group ranging from Brewbot, a beer brewing robot to Pivot Freight, a rate comparison engine for freight shipping. Techstars selected them from more than 1,500 applicants.

Smart Host, the team from New York, won the 2014 Startup Bus competition at Rackspace just before SXSW. The company created an app that aggregates and analyzes the short-term rental market from sites like HomeAway and AirBnB so a person renting out their place can price it correctly.

The program kicked off Monday and will run through Sept. 3rd when it will host its demo day, according to Jason Seats, the program’s managing director.

“Heading into the second program in Austin, we’re fortunate to have many of our 2013 Austin alumni on the ground as well as almost 100 incredible mentors,” Seats wrote in a blog post announcing the latest class on the Techstars website.

Each of the companies selected gets $18,000 in seed funding and are offered a $100,000 convertible note. They also get perks such as free website hosting and office space. When the program ends, many of the companies go on to raise money from angel investors and venture capitalists.

Postmates Launches in Austin and Wants to be the Fedex of Home Delivery

The self-proclaimed “Uber” of on demand delivery, Postmates, has launched in Austin.

The San Francisco-based company wants to be the “FedEx” of home delivery, said Bastian Lehmann, CEO of Postmates.

Postmates chose Austin for its expansion because of high demand and a hungry consumer base wanting more delivery options, Lehmann said.

‘Austin was requested heavily,” Lehmann said. “It’s a city that has a large tech community.”

And that fits with Postmates customer profile. It provides delivery from any restaurant or store including prescriptions, groceries, dry cleaning, electronics, cosmetics, etc. around the clock and in less than an hour.

On demand delivery service sounds a lot like Kozmo, a New York-based delivery service, which raised $250 million during the dot com boom to deliver everything from videos and groceries to coffee and ice cream to homes and offices. Kozmo went out of business in 2001.

But Postmates is different, Lehmann said.

“We don’t have any inventory or delivery vans,” he said.

Logo-PostmatesThe company is like Uber or Lyft and relies on individuals and their cars and bikes to pick up goods and delivery them to their customers. It has a network of 3,000 individual delivery couriers, called Postmates, in the six cities in which it operates. It’s the largest fleet behind Uber and Lyft, Lehmann said. The company currently makes more than 15,000 deliveries weekly nationwide.

Postmates has raised $23 million in venture capital and has 56 employees. It plans to hire between two to five full time employees in Austin.

Postmates officially launched today in Austin and it’s offering a promotion including free delivery through June 15th and free mini-pies from Sugar Mama’s Bakeshop on Thursday and Friday.

The Postmates “app, available for iOS and Android, allows users to browse an inventory of thousands of restaurants and stores in their city, add items instantly, watch their rated “Postmate” (either a driver or bike messenger) moving on the map, and track their order status in real time. Deliveries start at $5 and users pay for everything within the app — including tip — so you never have to run out and get cash,” according to the company.

Postmates currently operates in San Francisco, Seattle, New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago and Los Angeles. The company has driven more than $12 million in revenue to local businesses and paid more than $5 million to its couriers.

Austin’s delivery zone for Postmates includes downtown, South Congress, Zilker, Tarrytown, Rosedale, UT Campus, West Campus, part of Barton Hills, Rollingwood, West Lake Hills and most of South and East Austin. And it expects to expand even further shortly after its launch.

The on-demand delivery market is becoming a crowded one in Austin. Already, Burpy, a homegrown Longhorn startup company, offers grocery delivery. Favor, which relocated from California a few years ago, offers restaurant delivery. And Instacart, based in San Francisco, launched in Austin last month.

But the competition doesn’t worry Lehmann.

“Our competitors launched after us,” he said. “We are the leader in this space.”

And the idea is not worth anything, Lehmann said.

“The only thing that matters is the execution,” he said.

Austin-based Startup Burpy Delivers

Burpy-1Aseem Ali was a carless freshman at the University of Texas at Austin living in an apartment complex. When he could work around friends’ schedules and borrow cars to get to the grocery store, he could get fresh food and produce. But due to the inconvenience, he found himself eating a lot of Ramen noodles. And he got tired of it.

Thus, the seeds of online grocery delivery service Burpy.com, for which Ali now serves as CEO, were planted.

Burpy has had fast success: It officially launched in Austin in fall 2013 and will become profitable this quarter. Burpy also serves San Antonio, Dallas and Houston and plans to expand elsewhere in the Southern United States.

While Burpy has some Austin competitors, like Couch Potato and Munchy Mart, those services only offer convenience store products on wheels, while Burpy will bring you anything you can find at Costco, HEB, Wal-Mart and Whole Foods, including meat and fresh produce. In addition to groceries, Burpy also delivers products from Office Depot.

Ali, now a senior in mechanical engineering, said many of Burpy’s consistent customers are “elderly folk, young professionals—people that don’t have the time (to shop)–and working mothers.”

When Burpy began, it charged a delivery fee of $15 to $20. More than two months ago, the fee was dropped. Now, profits come from product markup. Customers can select items from more than one store with a minimum order requirement of $35 per store.

“Let’s say I order products from Costco and Whole Foods. If you order $35 from Costco and $35 from Whole Foods, there won’t be any charge,” Ali said. “We’re seeing a trend of more and more people coming back using the site. The biggest challenge (to getting customers) initially was when we did have a delivery fee. People were hesitant to pay a delivery fee and a markup. Now we only have a markup fee, and people are getting addicted.”

One satisfied downtown Austin customer recently praised the company in a Yelp review for the store and product variety it offers. “Jose A.” wrote on Feb. 2:

“We’ve used (Burpy) several times so far for delivery to our downtown office and have been very pleased. Drivers communicate status and ask you questions about substitutes via text/e-mail, and if there are delays, they’ll let you know. And we LOVE the fact that you aren’t limited to one particular store, or to a bunch of local, organic stuff (we do order that too, though) when someone wants Diet Coke!

“Growing pains? Maybe a few. I’ve noticed a few minor website glitches, but I know they’re a growing startup and have always listened to our feedback. It can only get better from here, and everyone in our office has become huge fans!”

Nationally, there are competitors more similar to Burpy: Instacart is an online grocery business that serves Boston, Chicago, D.C. and San Francisco, and FreshDirect serves New York City.

Ali said Burpy is able to be successful because of today’s technology. Many well-funded grocery startups failed in the 1990s because of pricey investments in infrastructure like delivery vehicles and warehouse space. Now, “everyone has a strong piece of technology in their back pockets now. Drivers have smart phones. … Whenever an order comes in, we send out texts to shoppers in an area with the order number, zip code, cost of delivery. There’s an accept or decline button. If they accept, a text comes with a link to shopping orders and delivery information.”

Burpy launched its beta version targeted at UT students in March 2013. During its official launch in Austin in September 2013, Burpy brought in $4,500 in revenue. The company has grown every month and will be profitable this quarter. They are on track to bring in more than $80,000 this month.

So far, the company has had only one investor—Azim Makanojiya—who has put $500,000 into Burpy. Ali and Makanojiya met threw a family connection, and like Ali, Makanojiya became an entrepreneur as a college student. While at the University of Houston, he first entered the e-commerce space in 2007, with wrist-band.com, a manufacturer of custom-made silicone wristbands. He now also serves as CEO of CorporateRecycles.com, which recycles and disposes of company IT appliances.

Makanojiya is not surprised at Burpy’s success and plans on participating in a Series A funding round that will likely occur this year.

“The hardest part about startups is actually grinding it out for a good year,” he said. “You lose motivation. A lot of roadblocks come your way—things you never even anticipated. … I always though if Burpy was actually executed correctly and done correctly, it would be a great success. … I think the execution was the big X factor in this business, and I think the team is doing a phenomenal job with that.”

In addition to Ali, Burpy’s management team comprises students who worked together in a UT Longhorn Startup class: CTO Sharez Prasla, CFO Safan Abdul, COO Alishah Momin and CMO Azim Momin.

In addition to finding more delivery drivers, a challenge for Burpy is finding the best payment platform for its employees. The company tried a direct-deposit method but dropped it due to the two-to-three-day transfer time. Burpy also tried prepaid VISA debit cards, but, like PayPal, the inherent fee structure made it unpopular with drivers. Burpy is currently working with Google Wallet, which provides about 80 percent of the features they want.

“I think technology in the next year or so will catch on and cater to these type of business product lines where there needs to be a platform where an instant transfer of funds can happen,” Makanojiya said.

Burpy Expands to San Antonio and Houston

Last Longhorn Startup class, Aseem Ali and a team of undergraduate students pitched Burpy, a grocery delivery service.
Now he’s running a quickly growing startup and finishing up his degree as a senior studying mechanical engineering at the University of Texas.
Burpy, which expanded into the San Antonio market on Nov. 25th, plans to launch in Houston on Monday.
That means Burpy will provide grocery service to all major markets in Texas with plans to expand to Dallas-Fort Worth and Bryan-College Station early next year.
Burpy, which used to charge a delivery fee ranging from $15 to $20, no longer charges for delivery. Since it made that move, Burpy has taken off, Ali said.
“We’ve seen amazing adoption,” he said during a recent interview.
In San Antonio, in the last few weeks, Burpy has fulfilled more than 300 orders, Ali said.
“Burpy delivers everything that you can find in a pantry or a refrigerator,” Ali said. “A lot of organic food and a lot of produce.”
The company, based in Austin, has 45 daily shoppers in San Antonio, 50 in Austin, 30 in Houston and 20 in Dallas.
In the next year, Burpy expects to do about $1 million in revenue, Ali said. He graduates in May and plans to work on the business full time.
Burpy gets its grocery items from Wal-Mart, HEB, Costco, Whole Foods. And it recently added office supplies and Office Depot.
Beyond Texas, Burpy plans to expand to Oklahoma City, Tulsa and Kansas City.
Although grocery delivery has been tried before on a large scale and flopped, Ali thinks his business will succeed where others have failed largely because the company crowdsources delivery and uses the latest technology tools to manage its workforce and orders.
Burpy doesn’t have any inventory, warehouses or expensive delivery vans. It taps into existing resources to maximize its efficiency, Ali said. The company does have a few competitors such as Greenling, but it focuses primarily on locally produced organic food.
“We can deliver Oreos and hot Cheetos,” Ali said.
Other Austin competitors include Couch Potato, Munchy Mart and Austin Grocer, but they don’t deliver an extensive inventory of items, Ali said.
Other national competitors include Peapod, Instacart, Amazon Fresh and Walmart to go, but they are not available yet in the Texas market, Ali said. He hopes to establish first mover advantage with the customer base here.
Ali attended the latest Longhorn Startup Demo Day and he said his biggest takeaway came from Billionaire Mark Cuban. It’s best to learn from history, Ali said. Webvan, one of the biggest dot com failures of all time, blew through $1 billion setting up a home grocery delivery network and then filed for bankruptcy. Amazon bought its assets in bankruptcy. It also bought out HomeGrocer, which had gone public and then its stock plummeted.
Burpy has learned from the mistakes made by others, Ali said. The company has raised some angel investment. Sai Ganesh, CTO of Audingo in Austin, is mentoring Burpy. The company is also hiring drivers.

Grocery Delivery Service Burpy Featured on a Slice of Silicon Hills

Not bring you frozen food in a truck, but actually go to H-E-B or Walmart and pick up what you want as if you were going yourself. Well, if you live in Austin, you can now use Burpy – a grocery delivery service that does exactly that.
Burpy was founded by University of Texas mechanical engineering Senior Aseem Ali. Ali did not have a car for his first few semesters at UT, and had been looking for an alternative way to purchase groceries. Teaming up with four other UT students, Ali launched the company in March of 2013 and has made around 120 deliveries so far. Burpy also participated in UT’s Longhorn Startup program, where the five students were mentored by Sai Ganesh, Dennis Kashkin, Travis McCutcheon.
Users can order food and other items found at grocers such as HEB and Whole Foods directly from Burpy.com. The delivery price varies from $10 to $12 depending on the type of service you select — Burpy can deliver any time between 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. or can be scheduled to deliver at a specific time. Users are also able to upload an entire grocery list if they already know what they need.
In the last three weeks, Burpy has expanded its operation to serve the entire Austin area. It is currently looking to contract additional drivers for specific area codes.
